Velankanni Temple

Velankanni is a small town in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu India. This place lies on the coast of Bay of Bengal, just three hundred and fifty kilo meters from Chennai. It is a just twelve kilo meters away from Nagapattinam. This year annual feast of this temple is held on September 8^th 2019.  The place is famous as Lady of Good health. This is one of the most visited Roman Catholic Latin Rite Shrines which is called as Basilica of the Lady of Good Health. 

The place is well known as Lourdes of the East and the church is named as Velankanni Church. This is one of the most respected pilgrimages of Catholics of India. The story of the church dates back to sixteenth to seventeenth century. It is believed that the Mother Marry has appeared in this small village with her infant Jesus in her both hands. Annually twenty millions of pilgrims visit to this place.

Many Hindus also worship this Marry and take her blessings. Even Muslims are coming here from all over the India and from neighboring countries. The festival is celebrated every year for ten days. The eleventh day is the feast of this temple. Many people keep fasting for forty days and worship the Mother Marry. There are good transport arrangements are made by the state government of Tamil Nadu, there will be many special busses are provided during the festival. At least three million people visit this place during the festival days in the Velankanni Temple. The government of India is also providing special trains to visit to this temple.

There are many men, wear green dress for the forty days and will have their fasting for all the forty days. In the fasting time, they take only one time food, only after visiting to this temple; they turn to their regular life. These people avoid smoking, drinking and other bad habits during the fasting days. Parents when they do not get baby for a long years, once they come here and worship the Mother Marry will get their baby, after that they name the baby as Velankanni. Many people without the own homes, will come and pray here and they will be in a position to buy a home or construct a home shortly.

If the person thinks to contribute something for this temple throws the object in the Bay of Bengal and it is reaching to the temple. This is wonder of the temple here at the Velankanni town. All the devotees of the temple are contributing their money and other valuables to this temple, once their prayers are fulfilled by the Mother Marry. This Velankanni town has all the facilities. There are cheap and costly places like lodges and small to big hotels are available to stay and worship the Mother Marry. All religious people visit or wish to visit this place at least once in their lifetime.
